ETTA JAMES: The 20th Century Music Collection

Rosco Gordon

Rosco Gordon est né le 11 avril 1928 à Memphis. C'est sa mère qui l'initie au piano. Il forme son premier groupe très jeune et interprète ses propres compositions. Il se produit principalement sur Beale Street où il est remarqué par Rufus Thomas qui l'invite sur la station de radio WDIA en 1950.

Rosco Gordon réalise ses premiers enregistrements en 1951, initialement destinés au label Chess, mais qui paraîtront finalement sur RPM. "Booted", qui paraîtra à la fois également sur Chess et RPM, connaît un succès immédiat. Des disputes au sujet de royalties le conduiront à enregistrer pour Duke. Sa discographie de l'époque est assez complexe, puisqu'il travaille pour plusieurs labels en même temps. Rosco signe ensuite avec Sun en 1955, label sur lequel il publie "The Chicken", "Shoobie Doobie", "Sally Jo".

En 1959 il signe avec Vee-Jay, chez qui il publie "Just A Little Bit". En 1962, à la fin de son contrat avec Vee-Jay, il émigne a New-York où il enregistre pour Columbia avec son épouse Babara Kerr, puis pour ABC-Paramount et Old Town. En 1969 il fonde son propre label, Bab-Roc sur lequel parraîssent 5 singles. Puis dans les années soixante-dix il met sa carrière en veille et ne fera plus que des apparations ponctuelles. Après la mort de sa femme en 1984 il fera des retours plus fréquents à la scène et participera a plusieurs documentaires. On le voit en particulier dans "La route de Memphis" réalisé par Richard Pearce dans la série Martin Scorsese présente The Blues.

Il décède peu après, le 11 juillet 2002, à New York.
