Huey "Piano" Smith

Un peu oublié aujourd'hui, Huey "Piano" Smith fut pourtant une figure marquante de la Nouvelle-Orléans, au même titre que Professor Longhair et Fats Domino.

Huey Smith est né le 26 janvier 1934 à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Il commence le piano très jeune devient pianiste professionnel à l'âge de 15 ans. Dès le début des années 50 il accompagne un certain nombre de légendes de la Crescent City tel que Earl King, Guitar Slim, Smiley Lewis, Lloyd Price et Little Richard. Il enregistre un premier single en 1952 "You made me cry" pour le label Savoy. Vers le milieu de la décennie il monte son propre orchestre, les Clowns, avec le chanteur Boby Marchan.

Huey Smith & the Clowns signent avec le label Ace et inscrivent un premier hit en 1957 : "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu", qui devient un standard du Rock & Roll. L'année suivante Smith et ses Clowns réitèrent avec "Little Chickie Wah Wah" sur Vin, un sous label de Ace, puis sur Ace avec "We Like Birdland", "Well I'll be John Brown" et "Don't you Know Jockomo". Leur plus fameux single est "Don't You Just Know it" couplé avec "High Blood Pressure". En 1959 ils enregistrent "Sea Cruise", mais Ace sortira le morceau réenregistré avec le voie de Frankie Ford.

En 1960, Bobby Marchand quitte les Clowns pour entamer une carrière solo avec le hit "There is Something on Your Mind". Il est remplacé par la chanteuse Gerry Hall et le chanteur Curley Moore. Smith signe avec le label Impérial, puis revient rapidement chez Ace où il enregistre en 1962 "Pop Eye". Puis Smith enregistrera, sans succès, pour le label Instant et entreprend des tournées, avec ou sans les Clowns. Puis le succès s'étend estompé, Smith abandonne la musique pour rejoindre les témoins de Jehovah.

Joe Medwick

Joe Medwick Masters est né le 22 juin 1933 à Houston. Comme beaucoup d'autre il commence à chanter dans une chorale religieuse. Il découvre le blues dans les années cinquante, qu'il chante dans les bars de Houston.

Pratiquement inconnu aujourd'hui en tant qu'interprète, c'est surtout comme auteur de chansons comme "Further On Up The Road", "I Pity The Fool", "Cry Cry Cry", "Call On Me" qu'il écrit pour Bobby Blue Bland, ou "Driving Wheel", écrit pour Robert Parker que son nom reste connu de quelques initiés.

Joe Medwick a pourtant enregistré, soit sous ce nom, soit sous celui de Joe Masters ou encore TV & the Tribesmen une oeuvre de qualité.

Il décède en 1992, complètement oublié.

Richard Berry

Surtout connu pour être le compositeur du hit universel "Louie Louie", Richard Berry a eut une carrière musicale assez chargée, tant comme compositeur que comme interpète.

Il voit le jour le 11 avril 1935 à Extension en Louisiane, mais passe la majeure partie de sa vie à Los Angeles. Il fait ses premierspas en musique en apprenant le ukulele dans une colonie de vacances. Au lycée il se tourne vers le Doo-Wop. Son premier groupe sera les Flamingos, mais c'est avec "The Hollywood blue jays" qu'il enregistre ses deux premiers singles pour le label "Recorded in Hollywood". Puis, avec Young Jessie, il devient membre des Flairs, groupe qui tient son nom du label Flair pour lequel il enregistre plus d'une douzaine de singles.

Richard Berry a réalise parallèlement d'autres enregistrements sans être crédité. Ainsi, on lui doit la premier enregistrement de "Riot in cell block #9" avec les Robins, ou encore la voie masculine donnant la réplique à Etta James dans "Roll with me Henry".

C'est en 1955 qu'il compose le titre qui le fera passer à la postérité "Louie Louie", mais qu'il n'enregistre qu'en 1957 avec les Paraohs sur le label Flip (Flip 321). C'est à cette époque qu'il commence à s'éloigner du Doo-Wop et construit un style plus personnel à base de rhythm & blues et rock & roll.

Ce n'est toutefois pas la version de Louie Louie enregistrée par son auteur qui remportera le plus de succès, mais les nombreuses reprises qui se succèderont dans les années soixantes par les groupes américains.

La production de Richard Berry ne se réduit toutefois pas à ce seul titre, et il laisse une oeuvre assez conséquente et de haut niveau.

Il meurt le 23 janvier 1997 à Los Angeles.

Jesse Allen

Jesse Allen, guitariste et chanteur de blues dont on ne sait pratiquement rien, a déroulé sa carrière musicale dans les années cinquantes autour de la Nouvelle-Orléans.

Il enregistre un premier single un 1951 pour Aladdin, puis un autre la même année pour le label Coarl. En 1953 on le retrouve sur le label Bayou. La même année il débute une collaboration un peu plus longue avec Imperial. Son premier single pour ce label est réalisé en duo avec la chanteuse Audrey Walker. En 1954 sortent trois autres singles, avec une section d'accompagnement fournie, puisqu'on trouve aux côtés de Jesse Allen, Lee Allen au sax ténor, Red Tyler au sax baryton et Earl Palmer à la batterie, tous musiciens de la Nouvelle-Orléans.

En 1958 il enregistre encore pour Vin, un sous label de Ace, accompagné par les cuivres de Lee Allen et Red Tyler et au piano par James Booker. Il réalise un dernier enregistrement en 1959 pour Duplex, puis disparaît de la scène musicale.

Tous ses enregistrements sont réunis sur l'album "Little Walkin' Willie meets Jesse Allen" (Official OF-CD 5680), avec ceux, non indispensables, du saxophoniste chanteur Willie Hickerson, dit Little Walkin' Willie. La carrière de celui-ci est encore plus obscure. On sait seulement qu'il fit partie de Frank Motley and His Motley Crew.

Eddie Bo

Edwin Joseph Bocage, dit Eddie Bo, est né le 20 septembre 1930 à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Après avoir servi dans l'armée, il entre à la Grunewald School of Music pour apprendre le piano et le solfège. Il débute sa carrière musicale comme pianiste de jazz, mais s'oriente rapidement vers le rhythm & blues, qu'il trouve plus lucratif. Il forme un premier groupe, le Spider Bocage, puis part en tournée avec des artistes tel que Guitar Slim, Smiley Lewis et Earl King.

Il réalise son premier enregistrement en 1955 pour Ace, sous le nom de Little Bo : "Baby / So glade" (Ace 501), puis en 1956, pour son second enregistrement, il devient Eddie Bo : "We like mambo / I'm so tired" (Ace 515). Il enregistre ensuite cinq singles pour Apollo, dont un petit hit : "I'm wise" (Apollo 486), que Little Richard rendra célèbre sous le titre "Slippin' and Slidin". Eddie enregistre encore pour Checker et Chess, retourne chez Ace, puis signe en 1959 avec Ric, chez qui il reste jusqu'en 1962 et enregistre 9 singles. Suivent des enregistrements pour quantité de labels : Rip, At Last, Chess, Cinderella, Arrow, Blue Jay, Seven-B, Nola, Instant, Busy-B; et sous plusieurs identités : Roy Ward, Candy Phillips.

Il connait un nouveau petit succès en 1969 avec "Hook and Sling" sur Scram, et monte son propre label, Bo-Sound, sur lequel il obtient un autre hit : " Check Your Bucket". En 1975 il se retire de la musique et devient charpentier. Puis il revient en 1979 pour enregistrer un album de Jazz sur son label Bo-Sound : "Another side of Eddie Bo". Il est toujours actif et enregistre épisodiquement.

Guitar Slim

Eddie Jones dit «Guitar Slim» est ne le 10 décembre 1926 à Greenwood dans le Mississippi. Malgré une carrière extrêmement brève, ce fut une figure importante du blues néo-orléanais. Son influence sur des guitaristes comme ALbert Collins ou Buddy Guy est indiscutable.

Il commence sa carrière musicale en chantant dans des chorales religieuse. C'est en 1950 qu'il s'installe à la Nouvelle-Orléans et forme un trio avec le pianiste Huey Smith et le batteur Willie Nettles. Il enregistre en 1951 un single pour Imperial « New arrival / Bad luck ison me » et un autre pour Bullet « Certainly all / Feelin' bad ».

Puis il signe avec Specialty, et c'est pour ce label qu'il enregistre son principal hit, « The things that I use to do », dont les arrangement sont dus à Ray Charles.

En 1956 Guitar Slim quitte Specialty pour signer chez Atlantic. Plusieurs de ses titres paraissent sur le sous label Atco, sans qu'on y retrouve la puissance de la période Specialty.

Guitar Slim meurt le 7 février 1959.

Groupe vocal connu comme constituant la partie chorus de l'orchestre de Ray Charles, son histoire commence au début des années cinquantes. Constitué à l'origine sous le nom de The Cookies, cet ensemble composé de Margie Hendrix, Ethel "Earl-Jean" McCrea et Pat Lyles accompagne divers artistes de rhythm and blues. En 1957, elles accompagnent Ray Charles. Celui-ci leur adjoint Mary Ann Fisher et les rebaptise en Realettes.

Lorsque Mary Ann Fisher et Margie Hendrix décident de rester à plein temps avec Ray Charles, les deux autres reforment les Cookies. Elles sont remplacées au sein des Raelettes par Darlene McCrea et Della Bea Robinson. Cette dernière deviend la seconde épouse de Ray Charles.

En 1965 Ray Charles fonde son label Tangerine, et donne l'occasion aux Raelettes d'enregistrer sous leur propre nom. Elles obtiennent quelques succès mineurs. Par la suite la formation connait de nombreuses mutations et inclue tour à tour Minnie Riperton, Merry Clayton, Edna Wright. Vient ensuite Susaye Greene (qui rejoint plus tard les Supreme), puis à la fin des années soixantes Mable John lorsque celle-ci met un terme à sa carrière solo.

Avec de nombreux changements de personnel, les Raelettes feront partie de l'orchestre de brother Ray jusqu'à la mort de celui-ci.

Outre la biographie illustrée du Kid (in english), librement téléchargeable, ce blog offre également un lien vers la défunte revue Big Beat, dont les différents numéros peuvent être consulté en ligne (en français), et en particulier le n° 13 qui comprend un article consacré à ...
